There’s an infamous scene from Steel Magnolias where Shelby (Julia Roberts) is in the beautician’s chair and Truvy (Dolly Parton) is ratting up her hair like a madwoman… I just wanted to mention, for the under-educated, that this is the perfect depiction of how to do 80s big hair… that’s all I’m sayin’.
Well, well, well, my post about the iconic 80s woman and the decade of big hair ended up being quite popular! So, I wanted to follow up with the male version of 80s hair. Let’s face it, 80s men really far out-did, or should I say, out-doed the women.
And, all this tells me one thing in particular. Clearly, there are lots of people, like me, who live with one foot in the present and one foot in the past. Some lean their weight more so towards one or the other. As one wise reader pointed out, Joan Jett still has the same hair style as she did back in the 80s. I guess when someone is that incredibly cool, the coolness just stretches on into infinity.
I also I see what’s really happening here. Way back when I was a kid I used scoff, and yes, sometimes make fun of people who were still living back in the 70s, 60s or, like my own father, the 50s. God rest his soul, he never sropped greasing his hair until he got too sick from diabetes to do it anymore. Sniff, sniff.
And, now here I am. I’ve become my own punchline. Whoever doesn’t believe in karma is just a freakin’ retard… Eek, sorry, went back to the 80s there for a second. It was common practice back then to call your siblings, friends, and really anyone else who was acting kinda dumb, a retard. If you really wanted to insult someone you might call them an MR (mental retard).
To be sure this was not good practice and is indeed insulting to those with special needs… but omg did we have a ball back then calling each other retards and mental retards! So ashamed to admit! What can I say, young people have the luxury of being stupid and insensitive.

Interestingly you put Joan Jet among the Iconic males. She’s great. All those guys bring back memories of days gone by. I never cared much for Julia Roberts.

Joan Jett was a reference to an earliest post about 80s women and a comment that someone had made… I thought all men loved Julia back in the day… I guess not.

This post, and your last jaunt in the time machine, inspire an obvious question – what happened to all the hair? Just think, the 90s saw men and women shorn of their unruly locks, yet all that hair had to go somewhere, didn’t it?
In some forgotten corner there exists an ocean of 80s hair, throwing the Earth off-balance with its sheer volume.
Astrologer will tell you the planet wobbles on its axis because it’s not perfectly spherical, but why is that? Don’t you think all those abandoned mullets and poufy hair have something to do with it?

Hmm, that’s quite a hypothesis, one that should receive further scientific exploration, for sure!
I still remember in the mid 90s or so when a lot of the 80s hair icons decided to cut their locks, like Jon Bon Jovi and James Hetfield. I’m sure it was much easier to take care of and of course “with the times” but I also have a lot of admiration for people like Brian May who just keep on rockin the do forever. 🙂

Consider Bruce Willis. While he never stood out for his tonsorial extravagance, he did sport a pretty enviable mane in Moonlighting.
Fast forward a few years to Die Hard, and he was well on his way to a crew cut. By the end of those movies, even the crew cut had faded.
By the time The Expendables came around, so too did a chrome dome.

I’m sure that’s true in many cases. Bruce is definitely one of those people who would probably still look good with just about any hairstyle. Flock of Seagulls, no problem. He could rock it and still go kick ass. 💪🏻

David Bowie was to die for! His whole persona, Ziggy Stardust and glam rock and “The Man Who Fell to Earth” and “Labyrinth” and all.
I grew up in the 60s and 70s. I could have taken “retard” as my official name, I was called it so often. By adults (including dear Mother) as well as kids. And not in a nice, joking way. Welcome to the world of the Aspie… Heavy sigh!
At least back then men could have hair on their chest. So many today are deep into “manscaping.”

I’m sorry to hear that you were called that and in not a joking way! It makes me glad that we aren’t as flip about such things anymore. I can’t imagine what it must have been like for you. From what I know about Aspies they are actually quite intelligent people but with just a different way of relating to people.

Oh no, the association was just with the name of Murphy best character in the series Peaky Blinders. He played as Tom Shelby. Sorry, I digress a lot while reading 🙈😅
